WINE OF THE WEEK: 2012 La Visciola Passerina Donna Rosa

AVAILABLE: by the glass at Fitzroy Friday/Saturday.

We’re very sure that this is the only wine in our cellar made from ancient grape of Passerina, which makes this wine all the more special. The 2012 La Visciola Passerina Donna Rosa is made in Pigilo, in the region of Lazio, not far out of Rome.

The Visciola farm is undertaken with utter passion since 2009 by Piero, Rosa and their daughters Elisia and Cecilia. The vineyards, all dating back to the 1960s, are grown with biodynamic method; this has allowed them to obtain wines with territorial expression and marked characteristics of minerality, flavour, persistence and silkiness of tannins.

The 2012 Donna Rosa reminds me of spiced golden apple cut hay and sagebrush. It’s fairly full with a soft almost honeyed texture.

This wine is brought to us by one of our oldest friends, Dan Clark, and it’s a total pleasure to have it open this Friday and Saturday at 150 Gertrude St.
